Before there is a Cale Henituse to follow, Trash of the Count's Family opens on Kim Rok Soo, a 36 year old South Korean office worker with a settled routine and a taste for fantasy novels. He reads five volumes of a novel called The Birth of a Hero in a single sitting, falls asleep, and wakes in the body of that novel's minor villain, the young noble Cale Henituse, with the book's story still ahead of him. His motto is modest: live long without pain, enjoy the small joys, keep life peaceful. He remembers a startling amount about the characters he liked and nothing at all about the ones he did not. He is fit, tall, and by his own account unremarkable, a man with few close ties who does not particularly miss his old life. What that old life actually held is a question the novel takes its time with.
