Royal succession shapes several kingdoms, and in the Breck Kingdom it runs through John. He is a prince of Breck, the mage friendly kingdom west of Roan, and the younger brother of Rosalyn, its former crown princess. Her decision to give up the throne for a mage's life pushes the weight of the crown onto her siblings, and John stands as the heir who carries it. He is present mostly in what Rosalyn left behind when she chose magic over rule: a family, a court, and a kingdom that had expected her. Rosalyn herself thinks well of him, which counts for something in a family of formidable people.
