Ye Wenjie
Ye Wenjie is a young astrophysicist from Tsinghua University, swept up in the Cultural Revolution, who works as a logger in the Greater Khingan Mountains with the Production and Construction Corps.
Ye Wenjie reads English, and when a reporter for the corps newspaper, Bai Mulin, quietly lends her Rachel Carson's Silent Spring, a work the higher-ups pass around only for internal reference, she is drawn straight in. Bai is drafting a letter to the leadership in Beijing about the damage the felling does to the land, and because his hands shake too much to write, she offers to make the clean copy for him.
Ye keeps to herself in camp, a woman of so few words that some newcomers take her for a mute, and when Bai offers to speak to his superiors about her situation, she tells him she likes it where she is because it is quiet.
