Yang Weining

Yang Weining is a character in Liu Cixin's The Three-Body Problem. He serves as chief engineer at Red Coast Base, the secret military installation on the mountain called Radar Peak that stands at the center of the 1960s and 1970s storyline. Before the base existed he was a graduate student under the physicist Ye Zhetai, and that connection ties him to the family of Ye Zhetai's daughter, the young astrophysicist Ye Wenjie, whose path runs through the opening chapters. At the base he is a careful, guarded man, exacting about security and slow to extend trust, shaped by an era in which a single misstep inside a classified program can end a career or a life.
