A brilliant superstring physicist, daughter of Ye Wenjie, whose faith in the consistency of fundamental theory is the foundation of everything she is.

Yang Dong's model is likely to be the first thing tested on a new twenty-billion-yuan particle accelerator. When Wang visits the site at sunset, its director explains that seniority counts in theoretical physics and someone of her standing would not normally go first, but the older academics hung back for fear of failing and losing face.

Yang Dong refuses every request for a media interview, so the director and his staff only learned she was a woman when they met her two days earlier. She passes Wang with the chief engineer, who explains things to her respectfully, and gives the group a smile and a light nod without a word. Wang remembers her limpid eyes.
