Thomas Wade is the American chief of the PIA, the strategic intelligence agency of the PDC, a young, handsome man whose expressionless face strikes Cheng Xin as cold as a statue.
Wade receives Cheng Xin, a new technical recruit, at an empty desk with a cigar and a shocking question that Vadimov explains as an old joke of the intelligence trade. When research turns gloomy, he refuses to let the work stop and tells his staff they must stop at nothing to advance. When Cheng Xin proposes flash-freezing a person and launching the body in a small, light capsule instead of a living traveller, he praises her, which she has never heard him do before.
