Shi Qiang, known as Da Shi, is a Chinese police captain with a suspended record and a manner built for pressure, the kind of man who reads people faster than they read him.

Shi Qiang talks loudly, calls Wang Miao by his bare name and lights a cigarette before he has even lifted his head. When Wang blocks him from smoking in the apartment, the talk moves to the hallway, where Shi holds in a deep drag for a long while and then blows the lungful straight into Wang's face.

At a crowded meeting of officers, cops and academics the next day, he greets Wang as Professor with a smirk, and Wang has to take the only empty seat, beside him. Shi asks whether the nanomaterial Wang researches could be turned to crime, say as a knife that slices a car in half, and Wang cannot tell whether he is joking. General Chang tells him to put out his cigarette.

A couple of days on, past midnight, Shi pulls up beside Wang outside his home in a black Volkswagen Santana, his thick body filling the driver's seat, and hails him as Academician Wang.
