Shen Yufei
Shen Yufei was a Japanese-born applied physicist working in Beijing, known in professional circles for her earlier nanotech research at a Mitsubishi laboratory before she turned her attention to the Frontiers of Science.
Shen Yufei says so little that some who know her jokingly call her the Female Hemingway. She is of Chinese descent and holds a job with a Japanese company. Wang met her at a technical conference early in the year, and through her he met a few other scientists.
When Wang phones to say he has a problem and must see her, she tells him to come over and hangs up without asking what is wrong. She lives, clearly well off, in a luxury development on one of the newer commuter rail lines, where the houses are set around a little man-made lake stocked with fish.
To Wang she is cold all the way through, and not as a mask. He thinks of her as the old DOS operating system, a black screen with a blinking cursor that echoes back whatever is typed. He is sure computer games are not her kind of thing, yet she plays one that needs a V-suit.
