Pluto is a dwarf planet orbiting in the Kuiper belt, the ring of icy bodies beyond Neptune. Discovered in 1930 by Clyde Tombaugh, it was counted as the ninth planet of the Solar System for three quarters of a century until the International Astronomical Union reclassified it as a dwarf planet in 2006. It is a small world of rock and ice, smaller than Earth's Moon, with a thin nitrogen atmosphere and a surface of frozen plains and mountains. Its largest moon, Charon, is so large relative to Pluto that the two orbit a point in space between them.
