Neptune is the eighth and most distant major planet from the Sun, an ice giant about four times the diameter of Earth. It was the first planet found by mathematical prediction: astronomers calculated its position from irregularities in the orbit of Uranus, and it was observed at the predicted spot in 1846. Its deep atmosphere of hydrogen, helium, and methane gives it a vivid blue color and produces the fastest winds measured on any planet in the Solar System. Fourteen known moons orbit it, the largest of which is Triton.
