Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and the second smallest of the major planets in the Solar System. A cold desert world roughly half the diameter of Earth, it takes its rust color from iron oxide in its surface dust and holds a thin atmosphere of carbon dioxide, about one percent as dense as Earth's. Its landscape includes the largest known volcano in the Solar System, Olympus Mons, and the vast canyon system Valles Marineris, along with polar ice caps that grow and shrink with the Martian seasons. Two small, irregular moons, Phobos and Deimos, orbit it.
