Mao Zedong was the founding leader of the People's Republic of China, which he proclaimed in 1949, and the dominant figure in Chinese politics until his death in 1976. As chairman of the Chinese Communist Party he directed the country through decades of sweeping and often devastating campaigns, the last of which, the Cultural Revolution of 1966 to 1976, unleashed mass persecution of intellectuals and upended the country's universities and scientific institutions.
