Luo Ji is a college sociology teacher who gave up astronomy, a clever man without much ambition who says he simply drifts.
One evening Luo Ji runs into Dr. Ye, the mother of his old schoolmate Yang Dong, who suggests he found a cosmic sociology, the study of the vast society formed by all the civilizations scattered among the stars. She gives him two axioms to build on and leaves him to work out the rest. To a woman he has known for a week, he boasts that he established the field, then hints that someone else gave him the idea.
