It has no solid surface: its visible face is a deep atmosphere of hydrogen and helium arranged in banded clouds, marked by the Great Red Spot, a storm wider than Earth that has persisted for centuries. The planet is orbited by more than ninety known moons, including the four large Galilean moons Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto, first observed by Galileo in 1610.
