There is only one ship, and it has countless parts the way a body has countless cells. That is the Doctrine of the One Ship, an idea passed among Belters about what a fleet really is. Under it a fleet works as a single organism, its cells trading information by tightbeam and radio, taking in food and fuel, moving toward its own ends across the planets. The doctrine carries a second thing with it. Belters draw no line between family and crew, while the inner planets treat life aboard a ship as somehow separate from real life, which Belters read as a prejudice nobody has bothered to examine.
