Soren Cottwald is the personal assistant of Chrisjen Avasarala in the UN government on Earth, a polite, alert young European who follows her from meeting to meeting.
Soren trails his boss out of a session with the generals and absorbs her complaints about them. When she has him watch an admiral's network traffic, he asks politely whether she means him to spy, and she calls it a full audit. He finds a source honest enough to admit what it does not know about strange events on Venus, and briefs her on Jules-Pierre Mao while hurrying to keep pace.
