The Scopuli is the derelict that sets The Expanse in motion, introduced in the opening chapters of Leviathan Wakes. A light transport freighter of Martian registry, she is found drifting near a nondescript asteroid, broadcasting the distress signal that the ice hauler Canterbury is legally obliged to answer. James Holden crosses to her aboard the shuttle Knight and finds a ship with no one aboard, and the prologue opens with a surviving member of the Scopuli's crew, held by boarders whose identity and purpose are the first mystery. Everything about the Scopuli, from her silent corridors to her rigged beacon, is a question Leviathan Wakes spends its length answering, and the Canterbury's fate makes those answers matter to the whole Solar System.
