Classified SBb or SBc on the Hubble Sequence, the Milky Way is a barred spiral galaxy with two major arms and a scattering of minor ones branching off them. The pink and red patches through the arms are regions of intense star formation, lying in the galactic plane like wisps of cloud. One of the major arms, the Carina and Sagittarius Arm, carries the Orion Arm, and the Orion Arm is where humanity started. From the surface of Earth the galaxy shows as a band of light across the night sky, which is where the English name comes from.
