Melba Koh works as an electrochemical technician aboard the Cerisier, a civilian maintenance ship attached to the great joint expedition assembled from the fleets of Earth, Mars, and the Outer Planets Alliance. Among crewmates she reads as composed, precise, and unremarkable, a competent tradeswoman keeping her head down in a working berth. From her first chapters it is clear that the surface is a construction, that Melba carries private grievances and unusual resolve beneath it, and that she has her own reasons for being aboard. What those reasons are, and what she does about them, is her thread to tell.
