Martians are the citizens of an independent Mars in The Expanse, one of the two inner-planet superpowers established in Leviathan Wakes. Their world is governed by the Martian Congressional Republic, a disciplined, militarized society organized around a single generational dream: terraforming Mars into a living planet. Raised at a third of Earth's gravity, Martians tend to be taller than Earthers though not so elongated as Belters, and their military trains at full gravity to erase the difference. Alongside Earthers they are called Inners, the Belt's word for the people of the inner planets who set the terms everyone else lives under. The cold rivalry between Mars and Earth, and their shared dominance over the Belt, frames the politics from its first chapter.
