Mao-Kwikowski Mercantile is one of the great corporate houses of The Expanse. The firm's origins are in law rather than shipping: eight decades earlier, it began as a legal practice enriched by the marathon litigation that followed the failed Venusian cloud-city project, and the fortune from that case built it into a trade and transport empire whose reach runs from Earth and Luna across the Belt. The name matters for a personal reason: Juliette Andromeda Mao, the missing daughter of the family that controls the firm, is the woman Detective Miller on Ceres is hired to find and send home. The gap between the corporation's polished power and the daughter who walked away from it is part of the opening picture.
