Laconia is the name of a world in The Expanse, and it belongs to the series' final third, coming to the fore in Persepolis Rising, the seventh novel. The Expanse opens in a much smaller universe: humanity fills the Solar System, divided among Earth under the United Nations, Mars as an independent military power, and the Belt, a working class scattered across stations and asteroids, with James Holden and the crew of the Rocinante caught in the middle of its crises. Nothing in that opening arrangement includes Laconia. Where the world lies, who lives there, and why the name carries so much weight in the closing novels are questions answered in Persepolis Rising and the two volumes that end the series, and the story that gives Laconia its meaning belongs to them.
