Laconia is the name of a world that comes to the fore only in a later age. Humanity starts out in a much smaller universe: it fills the Solar System, divided among Earth under the United Nations, Mars as an independent military power, and the Belt, a working class scattered across stations and asteroids, with James Holden and the crew of the Rocinante caught in the middle of its crises. Nothing in that arrangement includes Laconia. Where the world lies, who lives there, and why its name comes to carry so much weight are questions for that later age, and everything that gives Laconia its meaning belongs to it.
