The Kronos system is a sparsely settled mining system on the gate network, close to dead, where about ten thousand miners strip palladium from a rich field of asteroids for anyone building air recyclers.
Kronos has a large, fast-burning star whose habitable zone has drifted since its gate formed, leaving the original living planet airless, its oceans boiled away. The only native life clings to a wet moon circling an outlying gas giant as vast competing sheets of slime mold. Corporations, government-backed groups and independent rock hoppers work some seven hundred sites.
