Kingston Xu was a painter, and the first great artist of Mars. He was born in China, on Earth, and emigrated to Mars, where his painting Icarus at Night came close to getting him deported back again. The early Martian colonies carried the quarrels of the nations that founded them, and China and Pakistan were at war when Xu used a Pakistani model for the picture. Showing an enemy in a healing and erotic light was dangerous work for a painter in that climate, and it could have put him in a jail cell or a labour gang.
