Josephus Miller is a detective on Ceres Station, a Belter who has lived there his whole life, and he wears a porkpie hat and plays very good poker.
Miller works for Star Helix Security, the company that serves as police force and garrison for the asteroid, and he has done the job for sixteen years with few illusions about it. His partner, Havelock, is an Earth man who struggles in the low gravity of the upper levels. Lately the crime families of the station have gone strangely quiet, and the calm makes Miller uneasy.
Captain Shaddid hands him an extra job on the side, a favor for a shareholder: find Julie Mao, the daughter of a wealthy Luna-based shipping family, detain her and send her home. It is the first kidnap job of his career. At home he drinks moss whiskey and pictures his ex-wife, Candace, in her empty chair.
