Josephus Miller is one of the two viewpoint characters who open Leviathan Wakes, the first Expanse novel: a Belter detective grown old in the tunnels of Ceres Station. Born on Ceres and off it only a handful of times in his life, Miller has spent thirty years working for Star Helix Security, the Earth-based contractor that polices the station, and it shows in him: a sad, worn face under a porkpie hat, an ex-wife, and a habit of drinking that his colleagues have stopped remarking on. He is handed a case nobody expects him to work hard: find Juliette Andromeda Mao, a wealthy executive's daughter who walked away from her family, and ship her home. The case looks like a formality. Working it honestly anyway is what pulls Miller into the events reshaping the Solar System.
