The Free Navy is the name of an armed faction. It first appears later in the timeline. Humanity has settled the Solar System, with Earth governed by the United Nations, Mars an independent military power, and the Asteroid Belt a scattered working class that supplies both. Belters, with their own creole and their own grievances, gather loosely under the Outer Planets Alliance, while James Holden and the crew of the Rocinante move through the middle of every crisis.
