The Earth-Mars Coalition Navy is the joint fleet through which Earth and Mars once policed the Solar System together. For close to a century the United Nations Navy and the Martian Congressional Republic Navy operated as partners under the Coalition banner, keeping shipping lanes safe through the Belt and the outer planets as humanity spread. That partnership has cooled into the rivalry: the two navies watch each other across the system, and joint action survives mainly where the Belt is concerned, the one subject on which the inner planets still agree. Characters speak of the EMCN as an institution of the recent past, its gunships and precedents still shaping how the system is policed.
