Chrisjen Avasarala is a senior official in the United Nations government on Earth and one of the most consequential political figures. She enters as Deputy Undersecretary of Executive Administration, a title that understates how much of Earth's policy runs through her hands. She is an Indian woman in her seventies, gray-haired and almost always in a sari, and she is sharp-tongued in a way the formality around her only sharpens. Before the UN she was treasurer of the Workers Provident Fund and district governor of the Maharashtra-Karnataka-Goa Communal Interest Zone. She is married to the poetry professor Arjun, and they have a daughter, Ashanti, and two grandchildren, Kiki and Suri. She is calculating and long practiced, ruthless in pursuit of an objective and fiercely protective of her own.
