Chris Williams is a young naval officer, very tall for an Earther, from a long line of Methodists in Minnesota, who seeks out Pastor Anna in the ship's dining room one sleepless night.
What troubles Chris is not only the Ring but that, even with it out there, Earth's ships still go on alert whenever the Martian fleet comes within range. After he and Anna pray together, he asks whether she holds services, and that question gives her a congregation aboard. At the small service that follows, he asks why she set aside a sermon she had planned on the sacrifices asked of soldiers.
