The Canterbury is an aging ice hauler working the long run between the rings of Saturn and the Belt's thirsty stations. James Holden serves aboard her as executive officer under Captain McDowell, part of a scruffy corporate crew that includes engineer Naomi Nagata, pilot Alex Kamal, and mechanic Amos Burton. When the Canterbury picks up a distress signal from a derelict freighter called the Scopuli, law and custom oblige her to respond, and Holden takes a small team across in the shuttle Knight to investigate. The destruction of the Canterbury that follows ignites suspicion among Earth, Mars, and the Belt and sets her surviving crew on the road that follows.
