Belter
The people of the Asteroid Belt: a low-gravity working class with their own creole, physiology, and politics, one corner of a divided Solar System.
Belters are the people of the Asteroid Belt in The Expanse, established from the opening pages of Leviathan Wakes. Generations of life in low gravity have made them physically distinct: taller and thinner than people from Earth or Mars, often over two meters, with bones that never carry a full gravity well comfortably. They speak Belter Creole, a patois grown from the languages of the Belt's original settlers, thick with hand signs invented for conversations held in vacuum suits. Economically they are the Solar System's working class, mining and hauling for the inner planets while Earth and Mars set the terms. That resentment has a political shape in the Outer Planets Alliance, the loose movement that claims to speak for the Belt, and the friction between Belters and the inner planets is the ground the whole series is built on.
