An arcology is a single complex of buildings designed to run largely independently of the city around it. Food and electricity are produced inside, water and waste are recycled as far as they can be, and the people who live there also work there. Because the population density is so high, an arcology uses very little ground for the number of people it holds, which is the argument for building them at all: they cut the demand a population places on the land and resources around it. On Earth there are arcologies in several cities, among them Baltimore, Abuja and Paris.
