944 Hidalgo is an asteroid in the Sol system, a centaur on an eccentric, cometary orbit that carries it between the Belt and the outer system on a period of thirteen years and nine months. It is a dark D-type object, roughly fifty-two kilometres across, elongated, turning once every 10.1 hours. Walter Baade found it in 1920, the first member of the centaur class ever identified.
