617 Patroclus
A binary Jupiter trojan riding the L5 point behind the planet, dark and icy, circling the Sun once every eleven years and eleven months.
617 Patroclus is a Jupiter trojan, one of the bodies riding the L5 point that trails behind Jupiter along its orbit. It is a dark object with an icy composition closer to a comet than to rock, and it circles the Sun at between 4.5 and 5.9 AU on a period of eleven years and eleven months. August Kopff found it from the Heidelberg Observatory in October 1906. A moon turned up in 2001 and was named Menoetius, slightly the smaller of the two, and the pair were the first binary ever identified among the Jupiter trojans.
