A main belt asteroid about 214 kilometers across, low in density and closer to a loose pile of gravel and scrap than a solid rock.
45 Eugenia is a main belt asteroid roughly 214 kilometers across, an F-type carbonaceous body whose density runs unusually low; it is less a solid rock than a loose pile of scrap and black gravel traveling in company. Hermann Goldschmidt, a Franco-German amateur astronomer, found it on 27 June 1857. It carries two moons. Petit-Prince, 13 kilometers across, was discovered in 1998 from Mauna Kea and takes five days to come around. The smaller S/2004 (45) 1, six kilometers across, turned up in 2004 in images from Cerro Paranal and orbits closer in, about 700 kilometers out, with a period of 4.7 days. On the surface sits a UN science station, built three generations ago and long since abandoned.
