UC Berkeley is a California university and the academic home of Miranda Beckwith, the materials scientist who studied the Carls.
UC Berkeley sits in the Bay Area of Northern California, near San Francisco. Miranda Beckwith came to the campus as a graduate student in materials science, and her lab in Berkeley is where her research on the Carls was carried out.
The lab's work covers nonstandard semiconductors and material properties, the specialties that put Miranda's research at the center of efforts to understand what the Carls were made of. She worked from that lab even when the people she was helping, among them April May and Andy Skampt, were elsewhere in the country.
