April May is a graphic designer in New York who, walking down 23rd Street after sixteen hours of work for a start-up, comes upon a ten-foot armored figure on the sidewalk.
April May has a design degree from art school, reached after hopping between advertising, fine art, photography and illustration, and a pile of student loans to go with it. She spends her days on graphic design for a small company whose time-management app she finds pointless. She shares an apartment with Maya, her girlfriend of more than a year, and the two of them stay close to Andy Skampt, a college friend who dreams of internet fame.
After nearly walking past the figure, April goes back to it and calls Andy at three in the morning, telling him to bring his camera and lights. He talks her into being the one in front of the lens, and she takes a spare microphone as a prop so that she can interview the thing.
