Phantom Steps
Phantom Steps are the Ki based footwork of the Murim in The Breaker, timing the flow of energy to the ankle so a practitioner can close distance in a blink or seem to stand in several places at once.
Every strike in The Breaker depends on the footwork that sets it up, and the Murim calls that footwork Phantom Steps, Hwan Hwan Shin Bo. They are internal Ki techniques built around movement rather than striking, covering advance, evasion and the work of putting an opponent off balance, and the martial world treats them as the base the rest of an art rests on, since a blow that never lands counts for nothing however strong it is.
They are performed by matching the circulation of Ki to the ankle and timing that flow to the physical act of stepping. Five basic forms are described, among them Advance, which closes distance so fast that the practitioner seems to cross it in a blink, and Scatter, which works on the opponent's mind and makes the user appear to stand in several places at once. The same five change character entirely with the skill and the volume of Ki behind them.
