In The Breaker, the Murim is the hidden society of martial arts schools, clans and sects that operates alongside ordinary life, kept apart from it by tradition and by the Martial Arts Alliance.
The Murim is the hidden one of two worlds: a society of martial arts schools, clans and sects that has kept itself apart from ordinary life for generations. The name is the Korean reading of the Chinese term wulin, the martial arts world of wuxia fiction, and a person who belongs to it is a murim-in.
Murim-in train to a level of strength ordinary people do not reach, and the separation between the two worlds is deliberate. Dojos, federations and long standing rules govern any contact between them, and the Martial Arts Alliance exists to hold that line. Tradition inside the Murim treats the bond between master and disciple as closer than the one between father and son, since the whole world depends on martial arts passing intact from one generation to the next.
