Yu Xiaogang, called Grandmaster, is Soul Land's foremost spirit theorist, a Nuoding academy teacher whose own martial soul, Luo Sanpao, is nearly useless.
Nicknamed Grandmaster, Yu Xiaogang teaches at the small Nuoding academy when Soul Land, the first series, begins, and no one on the continent knows spirit theory better. He is the setting's great scholar of martial souls, spirit beasts, and cultivation, a thin, unremarkable man around forty with half-lidded eyes and a lazed manner that hides a relentlessly precise mind.
His tragedy is practical: his own martial soul, Luo Sanpao, is nearly useless, and his innate soul power measured at the very bottom of the scale, so the finest theorist alive can barely cultivate at all. Pragmatic and calculating, he prizes knowledge above everything, and he carries an old hope of finding the disciple whose talent can prove his theories for him.
