Shrek Heavenly Dragon appears in the far era of the Dragon-Horse Federation, deep into the Soul Land franchise's timeline. It is a branch campus of Shrek Academy, the school that admits only monstrous talents, opened on the Heavenly Dragon Planet to carry that tradition beyond the home world of the earlier series.

As an institution it works the way its parent school does: a selective academy for spirit masters of unusual gift, trading on the Shrek name and the standards attached to it. The branch anchors the academy's presence among the federation's worlds and gives young talents of that planet a place to train without traveling to the original campus.
