Martial souls are the inborn spirits of the Soul Land setting, received at the age-six awakening ceremony in tool, plant, or beast forms.
The premise of the entire Soul Land franchise fits in one custom: at the age of six, every child attends the Martial Soul Awakening Ceremony and receives their martial soul, the inborn spirit that may take the form of a tool, a plant, or a beast. Everyone has one; only the minority whose awakening also shows soul power can cultivate theirs, and those few enter the continent's most exalted profession, the soul master.
A martial soul is inherited at birth and cannot be chosen, and its quality largely fixes the ceiling of a career, though the awakening's measured soul power, from rank 1 to the rare full rank 10, matters just as much. Along with the soul itself, a soul master inherits its bloodline, tying human families to the natures of their spirits.
