In the Soul Land series, Great Spirit Arenas are the fighting halls the Seven Great Clans built in every city of size.
Spirit masters who want a name and a purse fight for both in the Great Spirit Arenas. The Seven Great Clans raised them jointly, and any city of size has one, a hall of more than a hundred meters whose scale reads as a measure of the city's wealth and of the nation behind it. Matches are sorted by spirit rank and by the grade of a fighter's badge, and the higher the badge, the larger the purse. Grudge matches that end in a killing are held here as well. A fighter who makes a reputation in the arenas is treated as a celebrity across kingdoms and empires.
