Solo is a character who enters Wool past its midpoint. He is a grown man, broad and heavily bearded, with a manner unlike anyone else: wary and skittish one moment, oddly bright and talkative the next. He narrates his tasks aloud, treats hard jobs as small projects to be ticked off one by one, and holds onto books, tools, and routines with the care of someone who knows exactly what they are worth. He is a keeper of small rituals. He warms to company slowly, and once he warms, he is loyal without reserve. Beneath the strangeness of his manner sits a patient, stubborn good nature.
