Hank is a deputy of the silo's down deep. The silo's law is stretched across a hundred and forty odd levels by a handful of officers: a sheriff at the top and a deputy for each third of the shaft below, each with a small station, a cell, and a wire line to the rest. Hank keeps the deepest station, closest to Mechanical's floors, which makes him the lawman the mechanics, miners, and oilmen actually know by name. Serving the down deep means belonging to it a little: Hank deals more in favors, warnings, and familiarity than in formal charges, and the people of the deep floors treat him as nearly one of their own as well as an arm of the distant up top.
