McLain

McLain is the head of Supply, the fabrication floors in the silo's lower half where nearly everything the community uses is machined, molded, or repaired. She has run the department a long time, and her authority is of the settled kind that no longer needs a raised voice: her workers follow her out of loyalty and affection rather than fear, and everyone in the lower silo knows it. She appears partway through Wool, a shrewd, seasoned chief who weighs newcomers carefully and gives away nothing she has not decided to give. Between Mechanical below and the distant offices above, Supply sits at the crossroads of the silo's needs, and McLain sits at the head of Supply.
