Juliette

Juliette is a mechanic of the silo's down deep, a shift leader in Mechanical, the maze of generator rooms and machine shops at the bottom of the great staircase. Machines make sense to her; people are harder. She has spent her adult life among pumps, bearings, and the failing main generator she is determined to overhaul, and she is respected below for exactly the qualities that make the up top nervous: stubbornness, bluntness, and a refusal to let broken things stay broken. She grew up in the mids, the daughter of a doctor, and left that life young after a family loss opened a distance between her and her father that neither has crossed. Mayor Jahns and Deputy Marnes descend the entire silo to ask her, of all people, to take the sheriff's badge, a post at the very top of a world she has no wish to climb.
