Harper

Harper is a man of the silo's industrial floors, a refinery worker by trade. He belongs to the population of the down deep that the opening barely glimpses: the shift workers of the oil and refinery levels, men and women whose labor keeps the silo fueled and who rarely have reason to climb. What defines Harper from his first appearance is usefulness. He is steady, physically capable, and unfussy about what a job requires, the kind of worker foremen learn to lean on, quicker to act than to talk. He stands his watches without complaint and shares out rations more readily than opinions.
