Venus is the second planet of the Solar System, one of the worlds of the Core ruled by the Society. Once an airless furnace where a single day outlasted two hundred of Earth's, it was remade in the early centuries of colonization. Hydrogen shipped in from the gas giants gave it rain and a breathable sky, mass drivers spun its rotation up to a familiar day, and the floods that followed left four fifths of the planet under warm seas.
The Venus of the era is an ocean world of island archipelagos, white beaches, and polar ice, seeded with tropical and marine life. It is known for its wines, its soft fabrics, and the hedonism of its Gold society, and it carries real weight in the Society's affairs, holding one of the fleet's two great shipbuilding dockyards along with deep reserves of helium-3. Families such as House Carthii preside over its yards.
