Valentin is a Gray colonel leading the twelve Gray lurchers who fly Darrow and Victra toward Lost City, a squat, sun-darkened veteran who speaks flatly and plans for every turn.
Valentin wears no Legion badge on his street clothes, a sign that he has served out his mandatory twenty years. Asked whether his Grays are mercenaries, he answers that they are good enough to have lived this long, with a secure route and backup already arranged. In the city his team walks Darrow from a hidden garage through filthy streets to a meeting in a crowded club.
